Introduction

To ensure quality instruction for USF undergraduates and appropriate support for international teaching assistants (ITAs), a week-long workshop will be offered for ITAs. The workshop is designed to strengthen teaching, communication, and intercultural skills of future ITAs in preparation for their departmental duties related to the teaching of undergraduate students. Each participant will be provided a $150 stipend. Both native and non-native speakers of English can benefit from this program. Application now available on the Web.

Eligibility of international students for the workshop

Department faculty are invited to apply on behalf of their international teaching assistants. To participate in the workshop, ITAs must

¥ have a Test of Spoken English or a local SPEAK score of 50 or above on record with the Graduate School by Friday, August 8, 2003.

¥ be nominated for participation by a department faculty member.

¥ be given an instructional assignment for 2003/2004.

¥ be available to participate in the entire program.

For maximum impact, this program has been designed for no more than 25 participants.

Workshop Schedule

This week-long program will begin two weeks before the start of the Fall Semester. The group will meet daily from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Participants will be on their own for lunch from noon to 1:00 p.m. Participants should not have other personal or professional obligations scheduled in the department during the workshop hours. A detailed workshop schedule will be provided to the participants and to the department contact person.

Workshop Topics

¥ communicating in the USF classroom and laboratory

¥ practicing teaching with a live audience of USF undergraduates

¥ involving and engaging students in the learning process

¥ starting the semester with a strong first day

¥ building rapport with students

¥ teaching in the intercultural classroom

¥ asking and answering questions

¥ dealing with conflict

¥ using classroom assessment techniques.

Post-workshop Activities

On Thursday and Friday, August 21 and 22, 2003 the Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence will conduct teaching effectiveness workshops for all new faculty and teaching assistants, both American and international. Participants in the ITA workshop will be expected to attend. Details will be sent to the department contact person.

Workshop Facilitators

Facilitators will be from the Center for 21st Century Teaching Excellence and other USF colleges and programs. Collectively, the team has a long history of experience with teaching assistant training.

Application Procedure

Applications should be submitted by faculty in academic departments, not from individual graduate students. The following application includes a data form to be completed by a department faculty contact person. Please note the eligibility requirements before submitting applications.
