Jim is a Fellow in the American Psychological Association (APA). He received the first "Teaching Award for Community College Teachers of Psychology" given by the APA.

Jim co-authored Making Sense of College Grades with Ohmer Milton and Howard Pollio (1986, Jossey-Bass) and the best selling text Active Learning: Creating Excitement in the Classroom (ASHE-ERIC, 1991, Report No. 1) with Charles Bonwell.
