Active Learning Bibliography: Introduction

This bibliography is the culmination of the collective efforts of many individuals over several years. In preparation for a conference presentation entitled "Making Real the Promise of Active Learning" made at the 1989 Annual Meeting of the American Association of Higher Education, Dr. James Eison and Dr. Charles Bonwell of Southeast Missouri State University prepared a listing of published articles illustrating the use of active learning strategies in college and university classrooms. This conference session later stimulated development of the text Active Learning: Creating Excitement in the Classroom (Bonwell and Eison, 1991). The depth and breadth of the initial bibliography has been expanded significantly by Dr. Charles Bonwell (both at Southeast Missouri State University and more recently at the Saint Louis College of Pharmacy) and by Dr. James Eison, Dr. Ellen Stevens, Ms. Mary Cadagin, Ms. Virginia S. O'Herron, Ms. Eleni Polopolous, and Ms. Trinh Thompson at the University of South Florida. In addition, significant contributions were made by the following six community college faculty who served as workshop facilitators during a February 25, 1994, conference entitled "Inclusive Teaching: Involving College and University Students Through Active Learning" sponsored by USF's Center for Teaching Enhancement and the Southwest Florida Council for Liberal Arts Education: Ms. Julie Hendricksen, Dr. Maribeth Mobley, Ms. Sharon L. Morrison, Dr. Larry Gay Reagan, Dr. Irvin D. Solomon, and Mr. Donald Walker.

The massive yet essential job of data entry and bibliography preparation was completed by Ms. Barbara Orchard and Ms. Trinh Thompson of the Center for Teaching Enhancement at the University of South Florida. The immeasurable time, talent, and enthusiasm contributed by each to this project is gratefully acknowledged.
